Catholics attend Masses to pray for people of the Philippines

The Catholic Bishops of New Zealand express their sympathy to all those who’ve lost loved ones as a result of Typhoon Haiyan and will be leading Masses to pray for the Filipino community here and overseas.

“The loss of life, injuries, displacement and destruction on a large scale is a devastating tragedy for the people of the Philippines. We pray for them as they search for those that are missing, as they mourn their dead and as they work to restore essential services, said Archbishop John Dew, President of the New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference.

“Masses are being held around the country to pray with and support the New Zealand Filipino community who are devastated and anxious for their loved ones, said Archbishop John Dew.

Bishop of Auckland Patrick Dunn led a Mass at the Cathedral last night and Archbishop John Dew will lead a special Mass tomorrow night at 7pm at Sts Peter & Paul, Lower Hutt, with other Masses also scheduled.

“Our Catholic aid agency Caritas has launched an appeal for responding to the twin disasters of the typhoon and earthquake that have hit central Philippines. They are working through NASSA (Caritas Philippines) and other Caritas member agencies to assess the immediate needs for food, water, clothing and shelter are underway, and Caritas will support the emergency response through to long-term recovery, said Archbishop John Dew.

“The areas affected are among the Philippines’ poorest communities. As well as loss of life and homes, people’s livelihoods from farming, livestock and fishing will be greatly affected. We offer our prayerful support to these communities, he said.
