Post-earthquake plans for Christchurch diocese

This morning a meeting was held in Christchurch to discuss an action plan for the diocese after some Catholic churches and schools were damaged in Saturday’s earthquake.

In these early stages it is likely that people can still attend Mass at their local Church. However some churches and schools are clearly damaged and others have yet to be inspected.

The diocese is in the process of identifying one contact person for each parish. The Catholic Education Office is coordinating the response in terms of Catholic schools and is in direct communication with school principals and the Insurance Assessor.

The diocesan insurance broker, FMR Risk, has secured the appointment of assessor, Bruce Gordon, who has a dedicated team for the diocese.

Speaking to media on Sunday after Mass, Bishop Barry Jones said, “We just have to give thanks to God there is no one dead. There is lots of damage to property but there is no one dead… this has to be one of the wonders of the world.”
