Beatification of Pope John Paul II

Pope John Paul II will be a step closer to sainthood when he is beatified this Sunday 1 May, after which he will be known as Blessed John Paul II. His beatification will be celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI in St. Peter's Square in Rome.

Pope John Paul II is the only Pope to have visited New Zealand and spent three days here in November 1986.
