A pregnant woman is a mother whose child also needs a voice in our public debate.

There has been a lot of political debate around the decriminalising of abortion this week. Catholics’ view on this issue is well known and is shared by many others too. Take, for example, the very real concerns expressed this week by advocacy group, Saving Downs, on the push by some groups to introduce abortion right through to birth for disabilities.
Our concern is the well-being of the mother and child. Much talk focuses on the rights of the pregnant woman and in fact the current legislation doesn’t criminalize a woman who procures an abortion. We ask Kiwis to remember that a pregnant woman is a mother whose child also needs a voice in our public debate.
